What We Do
Poepathy seeks to help people navigate social adversity through a creative lens by using poetry as a starting point to open dialogues about broad ranging topics. Our workshops introduce people to different identities and perspectives through the art of poetry.
Alongside this, we educate people on the broader contexts that poetry exists within in order to encourage nuanced and informed discussions about the world.
Our Workshop Offerings
Poetry, Power and Protest
"Poetry, Power and Protest" centers around the evolution of women’s rights in the United States through examining creative literary texts by various female American authors. It consists of a presentation about the history of American female writers and interactive breakout groups where participants can share their reflections on shared material. Through combining a lesson with group discussion, Poepathy seeks to educate and empower participants to navigate history through creative lenses. Runtime: 50-60 minutes.
Civic Engagement and Poetry
“Civic Engagement and Poetry” is a presentation led by the League of Women Voters and Poepathy that centers around civil rights in the US through examining creative and historical texts by activists and artists. At the end of the lesson, viewers will write a creative piece or create an action plan about the topics at hand. By facilitating these discussions, both the League and Poepathy seek to educate and empower younger participants to navigate civics through creative lenses. Runtime: 50-70 minutes.
The Arts and Civic Engagement: Using Your Voice
“The Arts and Civic Engagement: Using Your Voice,” is a workshop with the League of Women Voters tailored to middle schoolers (6-7 graders) that seeks to teach younger students to find and use their voices through the arts and civic engagement. Through engaging in arts and introductory civics, this presentation aims to help students develop critical reflection skills and learn more about ways to be engaged in their community. At the end, students will create either their own political art forms or their own action plans to be more civically involved. Runtime: 60-70 minutes.
